In partnership with Nashville Songwriters Association International, we will release a video interview with a songwriter about his or her work each week. I’ve got to think his dad knows about it. Every time I’ve seen him perform it, you can feel the emotion. It was not necessarily the (kind of) song that he was becoming known for, but I think it was important to show another side of Cole. We both agreed it should just be about him, and people can apply it however they want. We even toyed with the idea of going fully personal with it, or try to do different vignettes. So he takes his idea to honor his dad.ĪG: Yes. Even though it came from, like you said, a happy really impacted him on the situation with his dad.īecause Cole lost his father in a tragic accident right on the cusp of his success. We kind of immediately knew what it should be about. Later on that next afternoon, I brought that idea up. This was one of the later ones so I took it back to the bus. We had written two or three songs already over the last two or three days. Like any songwriter would, I had a little double take and thought “Oh, that sounds like it could be a title, could be an idea.” So I just text her what was going on: a picture of (the stadium) and just said, “You should be here,” in the text. She loves it, and she loves going to shows. My daughter is a great country music fan. I like to walk up to the nosebleeds and back, just kind of take it in, and take a little panoramic shot.
Out of one of those moments, I was just walking around (the stadium) by myself. We were working on what would be his next record, "You Should Be Here." You write every second he’s not playing or having to do an interview. We were on one of those bus trips where you write three, four, five songs. They were all out there at 6, or whenever he was playing it was packed. If you haven’t seen a country show at one of the NFL stadiums, it’s a crazy amount of people.Īnd by the way, if people don’t know, Cole’s fans are fanatics!ĪG: Yes, and at this point, he had a hit-and-a-half, probably. Luke Bryan has sold it out, Cole Swindell is one of the openers. So you’re at an event, take the story from there.ĪG: Yeah, we’re at Gillette Stadium, which is very cool, in Boston. A happy, sharing moment for you, and a bittersweet, poignant moment that ended up being a very fulfilling one for Cole. There’s two family moments in the genesis of this song.
